FMC, SOFI, XMC, and PMC are compact mezzanine modules that plug onto a larger carrier board to add specialized functions.
FMC (FPGA Mezzanine Card) and SOFI are designed mainly for direct connection to an FPGA.
They are commonly used for:
ADC and DAC modules, RF interfaces, Camera interfaces, Digital I/O, NVMe, Timing and synchronization
FMC and SOFI use a high-density connector carrying FPGA I/O, clocks, power, and high-speed serial signals. Common versions are LPC, HPC, and the faster FMC+.
PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) is an older mezzanine standard based on the parallel PCI bus.
It is commonly used for:
Serial interfaces, Ethernet adapters, Avionics interfaces, Data acquisition and Industrial I/O
PMC modules are widely found in VME, CompactPCI and embedded systems.
XMC (Switched Mezzanine Card) is the modern successor to PMC. It uses high-speed serial interfaces, most commonly PCI Express, rather than parallel PCI.
It is commonly used for:
FPGA accelerators, GPUs, High-speed networking, Storage, Radar and signal-processing interfaces
XMC often retains the same approximate mechanical size as PMC, but adds high-speed connectors.
